ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the impact of micro credit programmes on entrepreneurship development using registered enterprises from Akwa Ibom and Cross River States whose workforce do not exceed ten employees for micro enterprises and forty-nine employees as case study. Specifically, the study aimed at determining the impact of micro credit programmes on entrepreneurship development in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, establish the effect of operating cost on the performance of micro credit programmes in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, establish the effect of credit administration on the performance of micro credit programmes in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, and make recommendations based on the findings of the study. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 400 responses were validated from the survey. The study adopted the innovative theory. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that Micro credit programmes do have a significant effect on entrepreneurship development in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, Operating cost does have a significant effect on the performance of micro credit programmes in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, and that Credit administration does have a significant effect on the performance of micro credit programmes in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. The study recommend guidelines by microfinance institutions to finance SMEs need to be flexible to accommodate the SMEs only when financial institutions appreciates and give technical assistant to the SME would be contributing to the SMEEIS to ensure success in the SME sector.
